Futures and Options Kicks Off 2016 College Guidance Initiative and Launches New Pilot Program, Moneythink

The College Guidance Initiative provides workshops that increase students' awareness of post-secondary education opportunities and assists them in successfully applying to college. Students have the opportunity to learn from each other, share their experiences with their peers, and receive college guidance advice materials. All high school students who are currently participating in Futures and Options programs or who have previously participated in our programs are invited to the monthly workshops. In addition, students may receive one-on-one counseling from our program coordinators.

On Tuesday, September 20th, we held the first workshop of the year, focusing on the Components of the College Application. The workshop was a big success with 15 students in attendance. Sania Jahan, 10th grader, reported, "I truly enjoyed the workshop about college guidance! It opened the door of my mind toward thinking about college and getting info. I loved the fact that I learned things that I didn't know before."
In small groups, students brainstormed all of the required elements of the college process and developed timelines for completing all of these components. Participants also explored the Common App website and discussed the different types of college deadlines. Finally, students participated in a "You Be the Admission Officer" activity, in which they reviewed several sample applications and made acceptance decisions.

We are very excited about a new program called Moneythink that we are piloting this year with 15 high school seniors. Through this program, we will provide students with the tools they need to make educated financial decisions when selecting a college. Students will also gain access to Moneythink's College Calculator, an interactive tool that compares the cost of different institutions.
